Corel releases Painter 11 its painting and illustration software package.
Autodesk Softimage 7.5
Autodesk has launched Autodesk Softimage 7.5 software for visual effects and game production. With this release, Autodesk has renamed the SOFTIMAGE|XSI software — acquired from Avid Technology, Inc. — Autodesk Softimage. The 7.5 version offers time saving new features, such as UV unfolding technology, a multithreaded Syflex cloth simulator and an integrated mental ray 3.7+ renderer. Artists have used Softimage to create numerous movies, commercials and video games, including the Oscar-winning film “Happy Feet,” Coca Cola’s “Heist” Super Bowl ad, and the “Fable II”video game.

Dominance War first 9 day Mini challenges kick off!
It’s time to gather up your creativity, pull together your talents, and get ready for a new kind of warm up competition in the Dominance War series – Mini Challenges! Although the theme is separate from the main epic event, world champion standings are assured for the best mini comp entries! Dominance War, a huge annual game art competition unlike any other! Once a year, for three months, artists from all over the world come together to take part in a friendly 3D and 2D war between communities. How it works? Artists must choose and represent a community involved in the war. When the war is over, the community with the best 3d game art or best concept game art, wins each unique event. End Date: March 2nd 11:59pm Eastern Time

3DValley Featured 3D Artist February 2009 – Jason Godbey. Jason grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a degree in social psychology and a minor in philosophy. He started with 3D as a hobby about six years ago but it soon turned into a passion and today he is making a living of it. He currently lives California and works at a video game company as an environment artist. Please read our interview with Jason below to get to know him and his work a bit better.

3DValley Featured 2D Artist of March 2009 – Gareth Southwell. Gareth is a freelance artist/illustrator based in the UK. He is specialized in figurative work and his preferred medium is black and white line drawing, though he does venture into color when the occasion demands. At the moment he is illustrating a series of philosophy books and working on his own comic project. He has published work in magazines in Europe, America, and Australia, and regularly contributes to The Philosophers’ Magazine.
